What is Botox?
This widely recognized brand of neuromodulating agents contains Botulinum Toxin, a purified protein that has both cosmetic and therapeutic applications.
During the Botox process, purified bacteria is injected into areas of concern to freeze the muscle at the injection point. When it's injected into facial muscles, Botox releases neurotoxins, which prevent the muscles from contracting and helps them to relax.

Botox Treatment: What To Expect
Before Treatment
We'll address any questions or concerns you may have before your treatment to ensure we understand your desired results.
Some have described Botox injections as feeling similar to a mild pinch, like a bug bite. The injection is directed into the muscle under the skin. The needle is very fine, which helps prevent swelling, bruising or pain.
After Treatment
It's important to refrain from certain activities for the first several hours after your treatment. You must not lay down, or bend your head for a sustained period of time.
Do not rub or touch the area that's been treated to avoid moving the Botox and affecting other muscles. In rare cases, some people report experiencing headaches following a Botox injection.
Botox FAQs
- How long does a Botox treatment take, and what is involved?
A Botox treatment typically takes between 15 and 25 minutes, and you won't need anesthesia. A fine needle is used to inject Botox into specific muscles. Topical anesthesia may be used to numb the area.
- Is Botox safe?
Our authorized prescribers are familiar with the anatomy relevant to Botox injections, and will use measures associated with the safe and effective administration of Botox.
These measures include proper storage, selection of the correct dose, and proper administration techniques. Our clinicians will provide patient-specific care and may ask about any alterations to the anatomy such as prior surgical procedures, for your safety.
- How long does a Botox treatment last?
Generally, Botox treatments will last 3-5 months, depending on how it's metabolized by the individual person.
- What is included with the first consultation?
Your dentist will conduct a comprehensive facial and/or dental assessment and recommend the optimal treatments to achieve your goals at your first consultation. If they determine that Botox is right for you, your treatment appointment will be scheduled.
- Is there anything I should do to prepare for treatment?
Yes. Starting about one week before the procedure, avoid alcohol. Two weeks before treatment, we also recommend that you stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce bruising.
- What are the risks associated with Botox?
Side effects from Botox are rare, and if they do occur, are typically mild and transient. They can include:
- Droopy eyelid or eyebrows
- Crooked smile or drooling
- Eye dryness or excessive tearing
- Headache or flu-like symptoms
- Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site
If you do experience more than mild side effects that last hours to weeks after receiving Botox, call us immediately.
- Who should avoid Botox treatment?
Botox treatment should be avoided by:
- People with infection at the proposed injection site
- People with muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting the muscles
- People who have previously had an allergic reaction to Botulinum toxin type A injections
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Children under the age of 18 years
- What are the recommendations for aftercare?
- Try to contract the treated muscle areas periodically for up to four hours after treatment, by frowning and lifting eyebrows to allow the toxin to reach all of the treated muscle.
- Avoid rubbing or touching the injected areas and avoid having facials and massages for 48 hours to ensure that the treatment remains at the site of injection.
- Avoid vigorous exercise and alcohol-based products on the area treated for 48 hours.
